Growing Power Post 1

1) reflect on your first visit to your site, who you met, what your first impressions were.
I went to the orientation at Growing Power, walking in I was overwhelmed by the smell of "Earth". I didn't have any idea what to expect assuming we were dealing with plants and such. Taking a tour of the place and learning about what they do, the services the provided I became very interested in such. Probing ecology to urban communities, making it that we can grow our own food on any corner of even in the city! It's much more then growing plants but how to fertilize the soil to make sure plants are placed right, growing up instead of out, and how animals can work with the growing of plants and not harm them.

2). Why you chose this venue. What your expectations were. That they are.
In all honesty the I chose this venue because of its location close to my house. Before taking the orientation I was not too sure of what to expect looking on their website and talking to a few other people who I know who have been to this place I knew it had something to do with growing plants. I thought that this would be something interesting, not having too much "farm" experience myself I was a bit nervous going in.After orientation and really learning what they are all about I think this organization is something that the community around it can really benefit from.

3) a set of goals and objectives that you hope to meet.
I hope that I can learn how to do "at home" farming, sharing this knowledge with others can really start a movement in this community.  This organization has come along way and can go a lot further if they continue to get the support of the community, I want to be part of this support system. Learning the different ways in which we can grow food. I think the things that I will learn with working with them can be easily integrated into my own lifestyle.

4). Any images of the area that you were able to capture (if permitted).

First Blog Assignment

Where were you born/grow up/live (where do you live now)?

Born and raise in the house my grandparents built I nor has my mother ever moved out of this house...

Family Religious practice then and now

Not only have I never moved I also attened the same grade school and church that my mother had attend being Mother of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, to this day we still continue to attend.

Class background (wealthy, middle/working class, poor)

Times have not always been easy but we always seem to squeak by as a family, we are most definitely a working class family.

Number of Siblings (your position- first, second, third…)

Just me and my younger brother!

One thing you admire about your family/one thing you find difficult about family.

The thing I admire is something I also find difficult which is, I come from an extremely close and very large extended family where we see each other almost every other weekend, lots of family lots of the time can be lots to handle, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Finish this sentence “In my family my role was/is…”

In my family my role is to be the best me I can be. I was raised to stride for my best and when I fall get back up and push harder.  Put 110% into everything I do, regardless if it be school work or cleaning the house, do it to my best abilities.

How has all of this shaped your role as a citizen or sense of community?

Everything above has shaped my sense of community in to being a kind helpful person, when someone is to struggle give them a helping hand. There is plenty more room for me to grow withing my community and become a better citizen but by my upbringings I feel as though I am on a pretty good path.
